University of Oregon nominates students for Truman, Goldwater and Carnegie Fellowships

EUGENE, Ore. -- (Feb. 22, 2010) -- Six outstanding students have been nominated by the University of Oregon for three nationally prestigious scholarships: the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and the Carnegie Junior Fellows program.

"These six students are testament to our remarkable student body," said UO President Richard W. Lariviere. "I congratulate them on their nomination and wish each the very best in this national competition. I also want to thank the faculty advisors and selection committees for their work to identify and support these fine candidates."

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is an award for students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government or other areas of public service. Truman Scholarships are awarded to 75 students each year.

The University of Oregon nominee is Benjamin Eckstein, a junior Robert D. Clark Honors College student from Salem, majoring in planning, public policy and management, with minors in business administration and non-profit administration.

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was created in 1986 to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences or engineering and to foster excellence in those fields. As many as 300 recipients are selected from nominations by universities and colleges across the country.

UO nominees are: Hayley Michelle Belli, a junior from Philomath, majoring in mathematics, with minors in German and business administration; Finley Blackburn, a sophomore from Portland, majoring in physics; Eric Carlson, a junior, also from Portland, majoring in physics and mathematics; and Patricia MacQueen, a junior from Greenwood Village, Colorado, majoring in geological sciences.

The Carnegie Junior Fellows Program, within the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, offers up to 10 one-year fellowships to qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. The Fellows are selected from a pool of nominees from nearly 400 participating colleges. Carnegie Junior Fellows work as research assistants to the Endowment's senior associates.

The University of Oregon's nominees for this program are: Adrien A. Wilkie, a Robert D. Clark Honors College senior from Dallas, Texas, majoring in environmental science; and Terra Reed, a June 2009 summa cum laude graduate from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who majored in planning, public policy and management.
