UO students earn distinguished study-abroad scholarships

EUGENE, Ore. -- (June 24, 2011) - Several students at the University of Oregon this summer and next year will pack their passports and academic endeavors for study-abroad scholarships.

In recent years, students at the UO have increasingly been awarded prestigious study abroad scholarships, including Fulbright, Boren and Gilman International scholarships. For summer 2011 and the 2011-12 academic year, UO students will participate in each program.

According to Director Kathy Poole, the UO Study Abroad Program provides students with the opportunity to globalize their education by exploring different sectors of the world.

"By recruiting potential applicants and advising students during the application process, the UO has provided many students with the opportunity to discover different cultures and enhance their education," said Poole.

Five UO students received Fulbright awards for international study or research during the 2011-12 academic year. Randianne Leyshon, a graduate student in Journalism, received a Fulbright English Teaching Award for Russia. Four other individuals have received academic Fulbright awards: Tracey Gill (Business, Spain), Kate Margolis (Psychology, Spain), Monica McLellan (Comparative Literature, China) and Kelly Sky (Environmental Studies, India).

In the past 15 year, there have been 69 Fulbright student scholars from the UO.

In addition, four undergraduate UO students received Boren scholarships. Funded by the National Security Education Program, the Boren scholarship provides up to $20,000 to undergraduate students to study in geographic areas, languages and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security.

Alex Rosenberg, Dennis Tanner and Ming Canaday were awarded the scholarship to study in China, and Kelsey Jarone will study in Brazil. There were a total of 151 Boren scholarships awarded nationally.

Only one UO student received the scholarship in 2009 and 2010. The last year that three UO students were selected along with one alternate was in 2008.

The UO also continues to succeed with the Gilman International Scholarship, a national program that provides scholarships to qualified undergraduate students who are participating in credit-bearing study abroad or international internship programs. For summer 2011, five UO students received awards between $1,500 and $4,500. These include: Quincey O'Gara (Senegal), Shamsu Said (South Africa), Amin Tufa (Jordan), Aloura DiGiallonardo (Senegal) and Megan Meyer (Ethiopia).

In fall 2011, 16 additional UO students will receive Gilman scholarships: William Brooks (China), Drew Davidson (Japan), Jadine Delfin?Watanabe (Japan), Scott Erdman (Chile), Vittorio Gaddini (United Kingdom), Salvador Garcia (Spain), Arlene Guzman (Spain), Natalie Lehr (Tunisia), Kirsten Lopez Hart (Malta), Rena McClearey (Japan), Richard Scott (Chile), Max Sleczkowski (Japan), Kathleen Taylor (Senegal), Allison Varga (Nicaragua), Laurel Way (Ecuador) and Haley Winters (Spain).
