Free UO concert at Medford’s Craterian Theatre to honor Frohnmayers

EUGENE, Ore. -- (May 13, 2009) -- Musicians and dancers from the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance will present a musical farewell tribute to Dave and Lynn Frohnmayer at the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater in Medford at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 21. The theater is located at 23 S. Central Ave.

The free concert will be preceded by a reception at the theater; tickets to the reception are $15 for UO Alumni Association members; $25 for non-members, available by contacting the UO Alumni Association at 800-245-ALUM, or at http://www.uoalumni.com. No tickets are necessary for the free concert.

Associate Dean Jeffrey Williams and Lynn Sjolund, a school of music alumnus and long-time choral director in Medford, will open the program with introductory remarks. The event is designed to honor the Frohnmayers for their many years of support for the University of Oregon, the UO School of Music and Dance, higher education, child welfare and Fanconi Anemia research. Dave Frohnmayer is retiring after 15 years as UO president. Both Dave and Lynn Frohnmayer have family connections to the southern Oregon area.

The program will feature vocal, dance and instrumental selections by some of the school's top performers. Members of the UO Repertory Dance Company will perform three selections; junior vocalist Steven Gutierrez, a Medford graduate, will sing music by Tchaikovsky, Fauré and John Ireland; the Sinombre Piano Trio will provide chamber music by Beethoven; and the Ross Saxophone Quartet will play music by Eugene Bozza and Sammy Nestico.

The UO Repertory Dance Company will have an additional presence in southern Oregon with a residency at Crater High School in Central Point on Friday, May 22, and Saturday, May 23, which will include a performance at Crater Performing Art Center with Dancing People Company on Saturday evening.

The evening concert is sponsored by the UO School of Music and Dance, the UO Alumni Association, and Medford residents Bob and Leona DeArmond. The Frohnmayers and DeArmonds both have strong connections to the UO School of Music and Dance. The music building was recently named after Dave's mother, MarAbel Frohnmayer, a 1932 alum of the music school. The DeArmonds are both UO alums -- Bob in 1951 from the college of business and Leona in 1952 from the school of music. One of the two new wings at the music school is named after Leona DeArmond.
