Claudia Holguín Mendoza is an expert in “Spanglish,” particularly within U.S. Latino culture, and the use of urban legends to intimidate Latinas, especially along the U.S.-Mexico border. At the University of Oregon, she is director of the Spanish Heritage Language Program and assistant professor of Spanish. She studies identity through language, teaching Spanish to native speakers who have been told their speech is incorrect or obsolete.
